Angela Beach Silverthorne I was born in West Point, Georgia, but hail Eastern North Carolina as home. Writing has always been a part of my life. As soon as I could hold a pencil, I was writing. I’m a firm believer that reading and writing go hand-in-hand. I devour books in all genres, but I love stories that focus on reality within families. I want it to be real, even if it’s messy and painful. That’s real.

In 1970, I married my teenage sweetheart, Dallas. Our family has grown from three daughters to three wonderful sons-in-law and nine grandchildren. In the large bulk of time between marriage, family and retirement, we moved ten times. I’ve worked various jobs—fifteen years with Hospice; ten with Literacy; six with Habitat for Humanity; three as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for neglected, abused and abandoned youth; and as a Director of a preschool for at-risk children. I have served with Pamlico Emmaus, taught Sunday school and written countless Bible studies. My joy is teaching seniors who actually end up teaching me. Isn’t that the way God truly intends it?

Between all the moves and a full life, I’ve always craved learning. I attended five colleges, finally graduating from the State University of New York, Albany, with an English degree. Every school I attended, I'd fall in love with a new discipline—accounting, microbiology, creative writing, Shakespearean studies, or Young Adult Literature. Each of these were tentative, a hobby.  My lifelong learning has been within the Word of God.  That's my passion.

Like most people, life has thrown me into a lot of deep pits, health crisis, death, anger, frustration and insecurity. In each of these seasons of life, I have grown to realize that all my effort and angst did nothing to ease me through them. Only waiting on God’s timing, trusting in His plan, and working in His kingdom helped me maneuver through these hard times. Trust me, nothing prepares you more to be a comfort to others than the trials and sufferings you have been through and will experience. It gives life credibility.  It braids your life to others.  What a joy to know if we allow God to use us, he will take every struggle and heartache, and turn it into glory for Him.

Chapter 1: Stories

Having my back turned toward the empty parking lot as I lock up the dance studio is slightly unnerving. In the back of my mind, I know there’s nothing to fear, but I still turn the key quickly and spin around to face the approaching darkness.

I hold myself close to the door, waiting for the feeling to leave me. Several minutes pass before I realize it isn’t going away. I can either stand here all night, or start walking. It’s with a show of false bravery that I take a step forward. As I walk away from the dance studio, I know I’m being silly. My brother, Zander, is constantly telling me that fear is a weakness. I know how to defend myself.

Defending myself isn’t the problem. Controlling myself is.

The walk to my grandma’s house where Zander and I have been living for the past several years is a good five miles away. I was supposed to ask Grandma to pick me up when Zander said he couldn’t, but I thought some time alone sounded better. At least, at the time it sounded like a good idea. Now, I’m not so sure that a fifteen-year-old girl walking home alone at night is smart at all. The fading sun seems to retreat faster than normal. Within ten minutes, I am left skulking along the streets of Albuquerque in full night. My pace quickens.

I know the way home, but in the darkness I feel my courage fizzle. I am practically running past shops with my feet set in the direction of the relative safety of my neighborhood, taking any shortcut available to get me home faster. I’m not the only one out on the streets. Average looking people mill about on the sidewalks, but I keep my distance.

Eyes down, I run. I’m only two blocks away from the cramped little neighborhood where Grandma has lived for twenty years. I am almost there when I lurch to a stop in front of a dank alley filled with scuffling noises and pain.

An unsettled feeling rises in the center of my body. I try to take another step, get away, but I can’t. A muffled scream sends another shot of wretched pain shooting through the air. It’s too much to resist.

Dance bag abandoned, tennis shoes slapping against asphalt, my body powers down the alley independent of rational thought. Fragile bones snap and howls of pain erupt. Delicious satisfaction rushes in as agony fills the damp alley. Everything else is forgotten.

Ruth slapped the window to gain the woman’s attention. “Hey, I’m talking to you! What in the hell is wrong with you? Are you blind or something?”

The tan-faced woman looked at her with a distant, unconcerned look. Her children were crying and they both had rotten faces covered with snot and tears.

Ruth pounded the window a second time and the tan-faced woman mouthed the words I’m sorry. The insincere gesture only intensified Ruth’s anger and she pounded on the hood of the car.

“You know what, you little bitch, why don’t you get out of the car so I can give you what you deserve for almost killing me!”

Ruth pulled on the door handle and it was locked.

The tan-face woman turned to calm her children and seemed hardly concerned by Ruth’s outbursts.

“You think you can ignore me?” Ruth said.

She backed up three steps and hopped twice before she planted her foot on the front quarter panel of the car. In front of the wheel, the metal bent inwards and the vehicle rocked from the force of the blow.

Ruth laughed as she inspected the damage her kick had left behind. She pointed at the dent and turned her attention to the driver. “You see? That’s just what you deserve! Now get out of the car and do something about it!”

About the Author 

Keith Rommel is a native of Long Island, New York and currently lives with his family in Port Saint Lucie, Florida. Keith is a retail manager and has enjoyed collecting comic books since he was a child (a hobby inspired by a teacher in grade school to help overcome a reading comprehension disability).

Keith Rommel is the author of the critically acclaimed dark suspense Thanatology Series entitled The Cursed Man and The Lurking Man. His newest novel: You Killed My Brother is a fast-paced suspense thriller with crime and some rather unorthodox police work. Kathy Gilliam bolted up in bed with the echo of her own screams dying in her ears. Her chest tightened and she tried to draw a breath.

Fear. Someone screaming. She was screaming. No. Someone else. Someone running ... someone ...

For a moment, panic set in.

Fear. Pain.

Kathy took deep, shuddering breaths until the tightness in her chest began to relax. She looked around, still disoriented. Then a different panic seized.

Turning quickly to the digital clock by her bedside, she noted that the ever failing Atlanta power had managed to remain on during the night. It was five a.m. She hadn't overslept again.

Drawing another deep breath, she tried to shake off the vestiges of yet another nightmare, the same one that had been haunting her on and off for years. Though she could recall little detail, it was the eyes she always remembered. They were always different and yet the same in their reflection of fear.

Deciding she would not be able to get back to sleep, she rose and went into the kitchen to make coffee before heading to the bathroom for a long shower.

As she stepped out of the shower, Kathy felt the last images of her dream fading. Slipping on the long terry cloth robe that swallowed her small, five-foot-two frame, she reached for a towel to clean the condensation from the mirror and began applying her makeup. Though paler than normal, her olive skin looked well enough to skip the base and she decided to apply only liner and mascara to her dark brown eyes and a little blush. As the steam started to fog the mirror once more, Kathy reached for the bathroom door when she caught the glimpse of a strange, terror-stricken woman.

Her hand froze on the knob. As she watched, the face quickly became obscured with steam. Shaking her head, she reached for the towel to clear the mirror and found only her own wide-eyed image reflected back at her. Kathy flung the door open, shivering from the sudden draft, and turned to finish her makeup. Obviously, her sleep-deprived mind was playing tricks on her. Finished, she pulled her still wet, brown hair into a ponytail and headed to the bedroom to dress.

Wishing she could have just one night that was dream and worry free.
